History of Rab

The ancient names Arba, Arva, and Arbia probably derive from the Illyrian Arb, meaning dark, green, forested.

Under Emperor Augustus, Rab became a Roman municipality, and already in the 5th century it was the seat of a diocese. Over the centuries it developed as a free urban commune and later passed through almost 400 years of Venetian rule.
